Serious assault conviction

Yesterday, [Wednesday 8 June 2022], 51 year old Shawn Le Lay was unanimously found guilty of two grave and criminal assaults, malicious damage and assaulting a police officer. He will be sentenced before the Superior Number on 6 September.

On Friday, 6 August 2021, Le Lay entered a neighbours flat over a dispute and carried out sustained assaults on a married couple within their home. He was augmentative and became aggressive when he punched, scratched, grabbed and bit the couple. He caused significant bruising on both of them and at one stage he grabbed the female victim by the neck and left them both terrified. Police were called by a neighbour and Le Lay was arrested for this offence, but once back at the police station and in police custody, he assaulted a police officer by biting him on the leg.

Le Lay was remanded into custody after his arrest to await trial.

Police Constable Sophie Dines said “The victims in this case must have been terrified during this attack by Le Lay and we commend their courage in seeing this through to prosecution. We hope that this result is of some comfort to them.”
