Rape Trial Verdict

Today [Friday 10 September 2021] 21 year old Alex John Hill was found guilty of one count of rape and one count of grave and criminal assault following a five day trial in Jersey’s Royal Court. Hill was remanded into custody and will be sentenced at a later date.

The offences took place between October 2018 and June 2019 and were reported to the police in July 2019. Hill was arrested in early August, following enquiries into the investigation, and appeared in court in February 2021.

The early recovery of digital evidence was crucial to this investigation.

The young lady involved has shown a great deal of strength and courage throughout this investigation and she has been supported by specially trained staff throughout the whole process.

Head of the Public Protection Unit, Inspector Paul Ryan said: “The States of Jersey Police have the utmost determination to investigate and prosecute all sexual offenders and we can assure victims that there are a number of agencies who are in a position to offer support and guidance, through all stages of the criminal justice process.

“We remain committed to working with our partners, especially support and advocacy services such as the SARC at Dewberry House, JAAR and the Jersey Women’s Refuge, to encourage victims of sexual crime to report such incidents.”

The updated Sexual Offences (Jersey) Law, which came into force in 2018, provides greater protection for victims and clarifies the law on consent.
