Man found guilty of sexual offences against child

Yesterday [21 July 2021] 50-year-old Adelio Camara Marques was found guilty by trial of:

- Procuring acts of gross indecency with a child
- Three counts of indecent assault on a female

Marques was initially arrested in May 2020 after his victim, who was known to him, disclosed the details of the offences to a trusted adult.

The young female victim told officers how Marques first abused her while she was under 12 when he performed a sex act on himself in front of her. Following this, further occasions saw Marques inappropriately kiss the girl and indecently touch her. The offences all took place between 2010 and 2015.

The victim has been supported by specially trained officers, Independent Sexual Violence Advisors and staff at Dewberry House throughout the whole process.

During interview and trial, Marques repeatedly denied all of the offences but was found guilty by jury. He was remanded into custody and will be sentenced on 16 September.

Detective Inspector Paul Ryan said: “Firstly, I would like to thank and commend the victim in this case, for showing tremendous courage in speaking up to reveal her abuser as she did.

“Marques’ crimes shows how he took advantage of his position, being known to his victim, to abuse her for his own gratification, and I am thankful that the jury has found him guilty of this.

“I hope his conviction and subsequent sentencing goes some way to providing comfort to his victim and her family so that they may move forward knowing justice has been served.”
