Attempted murder - statement

In the early hours of Sunday, October 30th, officers were called to a private address in Journeaux Street following reports that a man had been stabbed.

At the address officers found the 63-year-old victim, who was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital. He remains there in a stable condition.

49-year-old Gerard Eamon Maguire was arrested nearby and following interview has been charged with attempted murder.

The victim and the accused are known to each other and no one else is being sought in relation to this incident.

Superintendent James Wileman said: “Now that the case is in the hands of the court I am unable to talk in specific detail, however I feel it is important to reassure Islanders that cases such as this, and the incident last week where another man was killed, are extremely rare in Jersey.

"I want to be quite clear that there are no links between the two cases and that in both incidents the parties were known to each other and that the incidents occurred in private premises.

"Our Community Policing team will be working with residents in the area of this incident to allay any concerns. I would urge anyone with any information to contact us on 612612 and speak to one of our team, or call anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
