ROAD SAFETY: Near Misses at Pedestrian Crossings

The States Police have been dealing with three separate incidents where car drivers have driven through red lights at pedestrian crossings, where pedestrians with pushchairs have been using the crossing.

One of these incidents has led to a successful prosecution of dangerous driving, where the person has been banned from driving, and will have to retake their driving test before being allowed back on the road.

The other two incidents are under investigation.

We would like to remind drivers to stay alert and concentrate on their driving and make sure they are aware of what is going on around them at all times. When at or near any pedestrian crossing, drivers should be prepared that pedestrians might cross the road and lights might change to red. Any of these three incidents could have led to a tragedy.

Road Safety Officer Philip Blake said,

“These three incidents are extremely concerning; they could have all ended so differently. We obviously want drivers to take care and pay full attention to their driving but equally, it is also important, that pedestrians take responsibility for how they cross the road. Even though a green man is showing, they must ensure that any approaching cars are coming to a stop before stepping out. I would also like to emphasise that when a pedestrian arrives at a crossing, if the green man is flashing or has extinguished, they should not attempt to cross the road, it is too late and they should press the button and wait for the green man to reappear.”
