Fire in Columbus Street

Police are appealing for witnesses to an incident that took place in the early hours of Sunday 13th December 2015, in and around the motorcycle parking bay on Columbus Street.

At approximately 03.00hrs a fire has started in and around one of the mopeds or motorcycles parked in the bay. It spread along the row engulfing all of the motorcycles and mopeds parked there overnight.

The fire was of such intensity that it scorched the adjacent building and started to spread to the front door, setting off the fire alarms inside which alerted the occupants to the danger. The fire service attended and the fire was quickly put under control and then extinguished. Two occupants of the adjacent house were treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation. Occupants of the next house along were temporarily evacuated as a precaution, but allowed to return soon after.

Police would like to speak with anyone who may have seen anyone in the area early on the morning of the 13th, or has any information in relation to this incident. The police would also like to speak to anyone who parks their moped or motorcycle in that parking bay and has not yet contacted the police to identify their vehicle. Please call police on 612612 or anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
