Islanders warned about email scam

Islanders are being warned about a scam which emails people to say a friend has been robbed abroad and they need to send money.

Scammers will hack an email account hacked and email everyone to say the victim has been robbed in Spain and needs money urgently.

This phishing scam is well known around the world, and is netting results, which is why it keeps recurring.

Police are warning islanders to be on their guard and ignore this email if they get it.

The scam is operated by a hacker obtaining an email password and therefore access into web-based email.

From there, the scammer sends out a message using your scammed email address as the return to everyone in your address book. The email is a plea for help, such as "I'm in Spain, all my credit cards have been stolen, and I need help".

The email appears to come from the person and so there is a chance that one of the contacts on the contact email list will respond with some kind of assistance.

Crime Reduction Officer Jeremy House said: "Unless you are completely sure of any transaction, do not enter into any agreement with any person or company. Never agree to send off money, or part with personal information to a stranger. Beware of scammers who want your money.

"Keep your passwords protected. Don't send money unless you have spoken to the person you know, and know exactly who it's going to.

"Our advice is to delete the email and do not forward it on.

The email reads as follows (with errors left in)

I really hope you get this on time. I didn't tell you about our travel to Spain for a short vacation, but unfortunately we were robbed at the hotel where we lodged along with other folks. We didn't bring our phones here and the hotel telephone lines were disconnected during the incident. So I have access to only emails. Please I'm going to need some sort of loan from you for us to relocate to another hotel close to the embassy and also to get us another flight ticket. Those thieves made away with our credit cards as well which is why this can't be resolved instantly.

We've been to the Embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all and our flight leaves tomorrow..Please, Let me know if you can help us out?I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
