Man jailed for indecent assault

A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to three years in prison following the sexual assault of a woman on 27th December last year.

Jason Benest, a former bouncer, posed as a taxi driver to pick up his victim before indecently assaulting her in the early hours of the morning on the 27th.

In court today the Bailiff Michael Birt said that a custodial sentence was necessary as this was an attack by a stranger on vulnerable person.

Det Insp Steve Langford, Criminal Investigation Department, said: "This has been a long and complex case for the States of Jersey Police but today is about the victim and her family and we hope this sentence will help her move forward.

"We recognise the significant impact this incident had on both the victim and her family and commend her for having the courage and confidence to come forward and report the matter to the Police.

"This investigation involved Detectives working with specially trained liaison officers who provided support to the victim, consultations with UK forensic experts and regular engagement with representatives from the Law Officers Department; all of which contributed to this successful outcome.

"Whilst these types of incidents are few and far between in Jersey, the targeting and apprehension of any offender involved in this type of predatory behaviour will continue to remain a key priority for the States of Jersey Police.
