Rzeszowski verdict - police statement

At Jersey's Royal Court today, Damian Rzeszowski was convicted of the manslaughter of Izabela Rzeszowska, Kinga Rzeszowska, Kacper Rzeszowski, Marek Gartska, Marta de la Haye and Julia de la Haye.

Statement from Detective Superintendent Stewart Gull, read on the steps of the Royal Court.

"Today, Damian Rzeszowski's plea of manslaughter was accepted by the Royal Court, following the trial into the deaths of Izabela Rzeszowska, Kinga Rzeszowska, Kacper Rzeszowski, Marek Gartska, Marta de la Haye and Julia de la Haye.

"The deaths of these six people, including three young children, have left many families devastated. First and foremost our thoughts are with them at this very difficult time.

"We can only imagine the grief of the families, who lost their loved ones in such brutal circumstances.

"But today is not a day for vindication or celebration, but sad reflection.

"The events of 14th August 2011 have left a very sad, indelible mark on Jersey's history.

"Today's verdict brings to culmination more than a year's work by States of Jersey Police and the Attorney General's office.

"I would like to pay tribute to members of the public who provided the initial response to those very sad events of last August, and supported the victims at their time of need. As we now know, neither they, nor the emergency services, could have done any more to save their lives.

"I would also like to pay tribute to the Emergency Services, including Ambulance, Hospital & Police staff who initially responded to what was, clearly, an incredibly challenging and traumatic scene. Their humanity and bravery was of the highest order.

"Also to my team of officers and staff, who have worked tirelessly in building the case that has been presented to the Royal Court.

"Finally I would like to thank all communities affected by this tragedy for their support, not only of our investigation, but also of each other.
