Witness appeal following serious assault in Hope Street

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to an alleged assault in Hope Street which occurred in the early hours of this morning, (Friday 14 August) at approximately 2:30 am.

Police arrested a 23 year old man in connection with this incident this morning, and he is currently in custody helping with enquiries.

The male victim (34) suffered a suspected fractured skull and a broken jaw, and was taken to hospital where he is now being treated for his injuries.

Witnesses have already been spoken to regarding the assault and enquiries are ongoing today.

DI Alan Guy of the States of Jersey Police, who is leading the enquiry, said: ˜We continue to investigate this alleged assault but would urge anyone who may have seen or heard anything before it took place to contact us as soon as possible on 612612 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.'

˜This is one of a number of potentially serious assaults that have happened in the last few weeks. However, we would like to reassure Islanders that these are all one-off incidents which are being resolved, and in most cases, lines of enquiry have led to arrests and in some cases, charges made or files submitted for consideration about possible charges.'

Note to editors:

There have been 84 serious assault incidents between 8pm and 4am in the streets, pubs and clubs of St Helier so far this year.
Less than half of these incidents were stranger attacks where the victim did not know their assailant. Police investigations have identified the offender in 90% of these incidents.
