Man arrested following security alert

A 50 year old man has been released pending further enquiries following a security alert at Cyril Le Marquand House yesterday.

When security alerts happen, such as yesterday's, at Cyril Le Marquand House, a co-ordinated emergency response service to the incident is launched by all emergency services. For operational security reasons, details of the response cannot be given out.

We relay information to people on the ground about such an incident by communicating with the public who are affected in the vicinity.

It is too early to determine whether security in government buildings will be reviewed as a result of yesterday's security alert, but following the incident a debriefing session was held. We will now continue to debrief with the partner emergency services and any feedback will be considered.

Yesterday, it was encouraging to note that the evacuation procedures in place at Cyril Le Marquand House worked smoothly and efficiently, and we would encourage everyone in their place of work to find out what their procedures are should a similar situation arise.

It is obviously important that when such security alerts happen in Jersey, the public are informed but are not alarmed. Initially, we cannot always give out very detailed information. Our main priorities are the safety of the public, and preventing and detecting crime. We undertake to manage security cordons and sterile areas in a thorough and professional manner so as to minimise alarm felt and minimise any disruption.

Thankfully, security alerts such as these are rare events but again we are grateful for the co-operation and patience of members of the public yesterday whilst we safely resolved this situation.

We would like to reassure the public that this incident is in no way connected to any terrorism activity and furthermore, there is no evidence that the building or its occupants were being targeted. The Police would like to point out that they are dealing with this as an isolated hoax type incident rather than anything more sinister.
