States of Jersey Police

RELEASED ON MONDAY 31 DECEMBER 2007

States of Jersey Police are investigating the death of a 47 year old male inmate at HMP La Moye, who was pronounced dead early on Saturday morning.

The man's name is Christopher Eugene Curtin.

The man who reported suffering from chest pains was provided emergency medical treatment by both prison staff and members of the Ambulance Service.

An investigation on behalf of the Deputy Viscount has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the death by officers of the Reactive Investigation Team. The police are receiving the full co-operation of the Prison Governor and his staff.

Members of the States of Jersey Police Reactive Investigation Team and the Scenes of Crime Unit are assisting with the investigation. Protocol dictates that any death within a public institution warrants full and thorough investigation. Early indications suggest that the death may be attributed to medical problems suffered by the deceased. A Home Office Pathologist will assist in ensuring the full facts surrounding the death are reported to the Deputy Viscount.
