Have you or someone you know been victim of a hate crime? We have joined up with True Vision to provide a platform for reporting hate crime online.
Hate crime comes in many different forms and can be on the grounds of race, religion, age, sexual orientation, transgender identity and disability, however we know that the overwhelming majority of victims are reluctant to report their experiences to the authorities and shortfalls in national data collection methods also mean that many such crimes remain unrecorded, leaving them unresolved and invisible.
The True Vision website www.report-it.org.uk now has a Jersey page that islanders can use to report hate crime.
True Vision also has a library of resources on hate crime and whilst it offers a secure online reporting facility for registering incidents, it also seeks to provide guidance on what is hate crime and signposts users to other partner agencies that can provide information and support.
In the UK in 2014/2015:
4,169 incident/crime reports were received through the True Vision website.
63,500 people viewed the hate crime data section of the website.
24,200 accessed educational support material and social media. messages reached the pages of up to 800,000 people.
By providing this online, anonymous if desired, facility for reporting hate crime incidents, the website can help to close the gap in under-reporting.
Paul Giannasi, True Vision Manager said:
“England and Wales and Northern Ireland have developed one of the most comprehensive responses to hate crime anywhere in the world. A key objective has been to address the under-reporting of hate crime and our research tells us that less than one in four crimes is recorded by the police, despite the UK recording more than 100 times the number of some comparable states.
We have found the internet to be a great source of concern for hate speech but it also offers us some of our most effective tools to respond. True Vision has provided our most valuable tool and it delivers information to victims and professionals alike but also allows for the secure reporting of hate crime.
We are delighted to have the opportunity to work in collaboration with the States of Jersey Police to provide the same service to victims in Jersey.”
Our Force Control Rooms take thousands of calls every year, and are often asked very similar questions. In this section you will find some of those that are frequently asked
In this section are details on how to obtain criminal record checks, firearms certificates as well as other information.
